Using \( \hat{J}=\hat{L}+\hat{S} \) we get $$ |\hat{J}| \ge |\hat{L}|-|\hat{S}|, $$ or $$ |\hat{J}|=\hbar\sqrt{J(J+1)}\ge |\hbar\sqrt{L(L+1)}- \hbar\sqrt{S(S+1)}|. $$
